Bleach

Kurosaki Ichigo is a fairly normal high school student… isn’t that how these shounen shows always start? However, he possesses the power to see spirits. One day, he sees something that’s not quite like the other spirits; this one is a girl named Kuchiki Rukia, and she’s a Soul Reaper, whose job it is to weed out the bad spirits (or Hollows) and send the good ones (or Pluses) on their merry way to Soul Society. Through a series of events, however, Ichigo manages to drain Rukia’s Soul Reaper powers. Now he has has to take over the job! Typical shounen show, but with a dash more style than most and some very endearing characters. Based on the manga by Kubo Tite. (shounen, ?? episodes)

Eureka Seven

Renton has grown up with without parents, raised by his older sister and then his grandfather. His dream has been to pilot an LFO like Holland, who has been his idol since he was a child. Then, one day, he encounters Eureka, a young girl who pilots the Nirvash, a Type Zero LFO, the greatest LFO of them all. Eureka insists on bringing Renton back to Gekko State, where he not only meets his idol Holland, but a whole host of interesting characters who are sure to make Renton’s life interesting at the very least (that is what he wanted… right?). (shounen/mech, 50 episodes)

Kyou Kara Maou

Shibuya Yuri has an interesting life. One day, he was attacked by a band of bullies who decided it would be a great idea to flush him down a toilet in the woman’s restroom. But when Yuri was flushed down this toilet, it took him to an alternate land, Shin Makoku, where apparently he is their king! Now not only does he have that to deal with, but he also finds himself accidentally engaged to another boy! Whoops… can Yuri adjust to this crazy new life? Based on a series of novels. (comedy/parody/shounen-ai, 39+?? episodes)

Loveless

In a world where possessing cat ears and a tail is a sign of virginity, Aoyagi Ritsuka is just trying to be a normal kid. But he has a lot of other things to deal with: an abusive mother, the murder of his older brother Seimei, a split personality, and most of all, this guy who keeps following him around. The guy is named Agatsuma Soubi, and he claims to have been very close with Seimei; what’s more, he keeps following Ritsuka around! Not to mention all this weird stuff about Fighters and Sacrifices… what the heck is going on here? What kind of life did Seimei have that Ritsuka didn’t know about? Based on the manga by Kouga Yun. (shounen/shounen-ai, 12 episodes)

Monster

Doctor Tenma Kenzou had a great life; he was an up-and-coming doctor in Germany, was engaged to the daughter of the hospital director, and was an all-around nice guy. But one wrong move in the operating room one night caused him to save the life of the wrong person, and his entire world came crashing down around him. Now he is trying to clear his name after being accusing of a crime he didn’t commit, and trying to kill the one person whose life he never should have saved in the first place. Extremely intense and gripping drama, based on a manga by Urasawa Naoki. (mystery/psychological thriller, 72 episodes)

RahXephon

Kamina Ayato is one of those anime heroes who thought he was just a normal kid, but turns out to be a genius mecha pilot! Hurray! But there’s really a lot more to this series than that, as Ayato slowly learns that much of the life he had formerly been living was a cover-up and a lie. Animated by the genius Studio Bones, RahXephon is a mecha show that actually has a brain. (mecha/drama, 26 episodes + movie + OVA)

Saiyuki

Yet another take on the classic Journey to the West story, but this one has guns and a Jeep! Follow the adventures of Son Goku, Genjo Sanzo, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai as they travel west and never seem to get there! Time for our daily youkai attack! Poorly animated, but with amazing voice acting. Based on the (much better, imo) manga by Minekura Kazuya. (shounen, 52 episodes)

School Rumble

He likes her, but she likes him, but he likes… curry? Harima Kenji, the local delinquent, has a huge crush on Tsukamoto Tenma, but Tenma-chan barely knows he exists! That’s because she has a crush on Karasuma Ooji! Will Harima ever tell Tenma-chan how he feels? Will Tenma-chan ever tell Karasuma-kun how she feels? Will someone please tell me where all these zoo animals came from? Based on the manga by Kobayashi Jin. (school comedy/shoujo, 26 episodes)

Stellvia

Katase Shima, also known as Shipon, has always dreamed of going into space. To work towards that dream, she now attends Foundation II, Stellvia, a space academy! Shipon doesn’t have a lot of confidence in herself, though, leading her to sometimes fail at things at first, but when she perseveres she can accomplish great things! And, in true anime fashion, one of the first things on her plate is to save the world… (space drama, 26 episodes)

Yakitate!! Japan

When Azuma Kazuma was small, he loved rice. But after his sister took him to a bakery and showed him the wonders of bread, his life has never been the same! Now Azuma is determined to make the bread (pan in Japanese) that will define Japan as a country: Ja-pan! And of course the best way to do that is by competeing with other bread artisans from across the world, right? The shounen show that ties up other shows, tickles them with a feather, and calls them Betty. Based on the manga by Hashiguchi Takashi. (shounen/parody, ?? episodes)
