Kyou Kara Maou 45 — Betrothed vs. Fiancee

July 24, 2005, 10:34 pm

Aww, this was a cute and random little episode. I am fiercely protective of the Wolfram/Yuri pairing, though, so I was not very appreciative of a challenger! Yuri is so cute and gracious, though, willing to give Wolfram up to Elizabeth so easily… either that or he really is just a big wimp. I’d like to think he’s just gracious, of course. And Wolfram is just too sweet, staying up all night with Yuri to help him with his swordsmanship. The two of them are one of my favorite pairings ever and this episode totally highlighted a bunch of the reasons why.

Even so, I rebel against any episode which barely has any Muraken in it. Rar.

The fangirl maids taking bets on who would win the duel was priceless. I love those fangirl maids.

RahXephon DVD 6-7 — Episodes 20-26

July 24, 2005, 7:32 pm

I finally decided to just get it over with and marathon the end of this series, and it really made me wish that I had been more concientious and watched the whole thing without huge gaps in between. RahXephon is really one of those shows where you just plain don’t catch everything the first time through, and I’d also like to watch the dub (since Chris Patton, one of my favorite voice actors, plays Ayato), so I will be watching it again in the near future.

[spoiler paragraphs - highlight to read]:
Well, I must say I was surprised a bit by the ending of this thing. I was very pleased that Haruka and Ayato finally confessed to each other, since I’m a big romantic and I wanted them to at least tell one another how they felt before everything went to hell like I knew it was going to. I’m not certain that I really understood what happened after Ayato merged with the RahXephon, though, and I definitely didn’t understand what was going on right before the end credits with older Ayato and Haruka and baby Quon. Seriously, what the heck? But it’s a mech show, and those rarely make sense in the end. Of course, now that I’ve had time to reflect, I realize what was going on, but it was quite confusing at the time. The end of a show like this always has way too many things going on for me to keep up with everything.

Thank god that we got to see who Mishima Reika really was. The idea that she was 14-year-old Haruka was very tantalizing to me, so I’m glad that it was actually true. Which of course means that Haruka was what Ayato really desired, since she (as he remembered her, albeit slightly wrong) was the form that the RahXephon’s soul took. And I am such a romantic that it just kills me sometimes.
[end of spoiler paragraphs]

I can’t wait to watch this series again and really catch everything. As it is, I feel like the first time through it was too much eye candy for me to really delve into the story. That’ll be for the second time (which will also be easier since it’ll be dubbed). But that will be for sometime in the future.

In closing, I don’t know why I didn’t notice it before now, but the fact that Yagumo has the same seiyuu as Murata Ken from Kyou Kara Maou was really disconcerting. Just because it’s weird to hear Muraken’s voice talking about military stuff. But maybe it’s just me.

Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid 01 — Ending Days

July 15, 2005, 12:31 pm

Well well well, look what we have here. More FMP for me to ogle. Sousuke… so hawt… I’m happy that I finally was able to find a raw of this that I could play on my computer; an annoying number of raw distributors are using the WMV3 codec that doesn’t work on Macs. Rawr.

Anyway, when they said that TSR was going to be more mech-oriented than Fumoffu, they were not kidding. Almost the entire episode was a mech battle, which was actually okay with me, since I rarely understand what’s going on in those no matter what language I’m watching it in.

The best part, of course, was the end. This is just because I’m a much bigger fan of high school student Sousuke than of mech pilot Sousuke. And it is such a testament to how much I love his character that as soon as he gets out of the Arbalest, he starts doing his homework. So cute and conscientious! But of course, he leaves Kaname’s notebook on the de Danaan. Dork.

I really like the opening and ending song for this series, but that was kind of a given considering how much I like Shimokawa Mikuni. Voice acting in this ep was also superb, but I wasn’t expecting anything less. And I was really impressed at how well Kyoto Animation handled the mechs; have they even done mechs before? They looked really nice.

RahXephon DVD 5 — Episodes 17-19

July 6, 2005, 11:23 pm

I’ve been taking my sweet time to watch this series, partially because I bought the DVDs out of order, and partially because it can be fairly difficult for me to digest sometimes. It’s one of those very pretty, deeply symbolic shows that you have to be in a certain mindset to watch and appreciate completely.

At this point, I’m not surprised anymore at people turning out to be Mulians. Ayato’s mom being one was kind of a shock at the beginning, but Mamoru and Asahina weren’t really. I dunno why. I guess that I was kind of hoping that Asahina wouldn’t be one after we found out that Mamoru was, but at the same time it wasn’t really a huge shock or anything.

Even though I’m a huge Ayato/Haruka shipper, and was basically screaming at Asahina to get away from Ayato all through episode 19, I still feel really bad for what happened to her. It was really tragic. Even so, now she won’t freaking get in the way of the real OTP anymore. Mwaha, I am relentless.

Quon weirds me out a little bit.

Loveless 12 — Endless

July 6, 2005, 10:37 pm

In true Japanese fashion when working with an ongoing manga source, the Loveless anime ends without answering most of the questions it posed simply because they don’t know the answers to those questions yet themselves. However, also in true Japanese fashion, they manage to do it and make it look so pretty that you don’t really care.

The whole dream sequence thing was kind of trippy, but it was pulled off really well. The fact that it ended up basically being a test of Ritsuka’s assertiveness and a demonstration of how much he’s grown throughout the course of the series was a really nice touch, I thought.

Overall, for what it’s worth, I really enjoyed Loveless. While I wished that this last episode could have at least attempted to wrap a few things up, I would much rather they end the series this way rather than try and make up their own answers. I’m going to be buying this series on R2J DVD, just because I enjoyed it enough to want to own it, but fear that it will either never be licensed, or licensed and then not given the treatment it deserves.

I’ll miss watching this series, and really hope that they make a second season. Yays.
