Monster 52 — Lawyer

October 29, 2005, 9:54 am

Psychological thrillers hurt my head. A lot. And I like it.

[spoiler paragraphs - highlight to read]:
I like this new character, the lawyer guy, and what he brings to the table. He seems like a pretty sincere guy, and I’m glad that Tenma is gonna have a good lawyer on his side (even though I’m still in disbelief that he was captured in the first place, goddammit).

But the big surprises of this episode were learning that Eva knows about Johan and that Roberto didn’t die in that big fire. I barely remembered who Roberto was at first, but knew that it was definitely Not Good that he was not dead. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, what with Eva being able to clear Tenma’s name but not wanting to, and Roberto wanting to kill Eva… I have to admit, I’ve wanted Eva dead for a good long time now, but I’m pretty conflicted about it now. Rrrrr… show, I hate you and love you.

Monster 51 — Monster’s Love Letter

October 29, 2005, 8:19 am

[spoiler paragraphs - highlight to read]:
The show’s dynamic has changed entirely since Tenma’s arrest, and it’s taking a little while to get used to. The focus of this episode was entirey on people whose lives have been affected by Tenma, and their reactions to his arrest. What strikes me about all of them is their sincerity and loyalty to Tenma, which doesn’t seem contrived or anything. It’s all portrayed in a very genuine way.

The matter of what Runge found hidden behind the portrait in the secret room in the mansion of roses is quite an interesting development. And the fact that he gave Tenma advise after finding it was also interesting. Apparently this document must somehow clear Tenma of guilt in Runge’s mind, which is another change that was rather unexpected.

Monster 50 — The Mansion of Roses

…what the hell.

Noooooooooo~

That’s all I really have to say. I did have other things to say, but after that ending? Not so much.

Monster 49 — The Cruelest Thing

September 24, 2005, 5:40 pm

Every time I think I’m out, this show pulls me back in.

[spoiler paragraphs - highlight to read]:
Johan is really disturbing. I know that isn’t a real surprise at this point, but god… he kidnaps that little kid, then crushes his dreams. There is nothing more sinister than that, at least not that I can think of. I’m sure there will be something…

On top of that, Grimmer has become one of the greatest tragic characters in anime. The scene with him and the little kid on the bridge was absolutely heartbreaking. Both he and that little kid need a big hug, preferably together.

I am legitimately frightened of episode 50, because I’ve heard it’s a doozy. But then, I suppose they all are. Heh.

Monster 48 — The Scariest Thing

June 22, 2005, 1:59 am

Well well well, it’s Detective Runge, everyone’s favorite guy. Even after 48 episodes, his weird hand twitchy thing still freaks me out.

[spoiler paragraph - highlight to read]:
It seems extremely strange to me that Johan would go through all the trouble of coming to visit Suk’s mother to get at the tape just to record over the ending of all things. He could have very easily just taken the thing, or even recorded over the entire thing. Unless there was something really groundbreaking at the end of that tape, it seems like the stuff that got left on was pretty damned incriminating. Hum. And there’s also the matter of the author of “The Monster Without a Name” and his relationship to Johan and Anna… I guess he’s their father? That would definitely make the most sense. Well, we shall see.

I am not surprised at all that it took Runge less than half an episode to stop being on vacation. That guy has some serious issues.

Monster 47 — Nightmare’s Door

Yay, it’s Nina! I’d missed her. And Dieter, too. Although they don’t show up under the best of circumstances, but no one shows up under the best of circumstances in this show.

Grimmer’s little memory-regaining tirade was definitely the best part of this episode. Grimmer is fantastic.

Monster 46 — Point of Contact

June 20, 2005, 10:04 pm

Tenma’s back, and he’s awesome! Whoohoo! As much as I like Grimmer as a character, Tenma’s arrival just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

[spoiler paragraph - highlight to read]:
Obviously the big revelation here is that Grimmer is actually from 511 Kinderheim. This of course explains his freakish obsession with the place, as well as the split personality that he has. Which naturally makes you wonder if there are other 511 Kinderheim kids wandering around killing people…

Monster 45 — Monster’s Afterimage

June 20, 2005, 9:15 pm

Oh wow. I simply cannot write this post without spoilers. Every episode of the show is great. Every single one. When you think back on them, nothing much really happens, either. But it’s wonderful anyway.

[spoiler paragraph - highlight to read]:
There are two major questions that I want answered at this point. 1) Where the heck is real!Anna, and what the heck is she doing? I have to assume that real!Anna and Johan!Anna are going to run into each other at some point, or something is going to happen so that people realize that there are two different people who look exactly the same. 2) What the heck does Grimmer carry around in that bag anyway? He can’t just keep clothes and shit in there. I feel like there has to be something very important stored in that bag and I want to know what it is.
[end of spoiler paragraph]

Every single episode of this show is a freaking head trip, and I can’t get enough of it.

Monster 44 — The Two Darknesses

June 16, 2005, 2:04 pm

I had to take a bit of a break from watching Monster because of finals and the like, so I have a good 8 episodes or so to catch up on still. It was a daunting task, so I kept putting it off, but finally I started watching again last night and it totally reminded me about everything I love about this show.

The great thing about Monster is that it can totally broadside you, even after 44 episodes. The ending of this episode is amazing (I would have screenshot it, but it’s a pretty major spoiler).

This episode has some great Grimmer moments. Grimmer is shaping up to be one of my very favorite characters in this series. Dr. Tenma kind of took the backseat again, which is a little disappointing, but forgivable I suppose.

There will be many more Monster posts in the coming days. I have up to 53 to watch. (:
