Kyou Kara Maou 47 — The Proof of Life

January 3, 2006, 1:43 pm

A flashback episode! Usually those words strike fear into the hearts of anime fans, but this was a really neat little episode which detailed some of the events in the lives of Gwendal, Conrad, and Wolfram when they were kids. So cute! Tiny Wolfram is so freaking adorable, I want to die.

The episode mostly focused on Gwendal and his relationship with Conrad’s human father, Dan Hiri. The way that they faked us out by showing Gwendal’s idealized view of Dan Hiri rather than showing him in his old age was really interesting, and it made Gwendal’s realization that human lives are much shorter than those of Mazoku all the more poignant.

It was really neat that we got to not only see the three half-brothers at a young age, but young Anissina and young Yozak, too. It’s kinda neat that the origin of Conrad and Yozak’s friendship was hinted at here. Gwendal was the best, though; it’s very cool to see different sides to his character, and see how he became the character we’re familiar with. Really good episode.

Kyou Kara Maou 46 — The Forest Priestess

Story episodes are always interesting, and this one was particularly so. Strangely enough, it managed to shed some light on some general backstory issues, such as why Yuri was able to use his Mazoku powers so soon, and why his Mazoku element is water. These are things that I wouldn’t necessarily have cared one way or another about, but are pretty cool facts now that we have them.

The story for this episode was pretty standard, but tightly written and pretty enjoyable, so it didn’t feel cliche at all. The plot twist that the box of the Mirror at the Bottom of the Sea might exist in the human world is pretty interesting. Not enough Muraken in this ep for my tastes, but I always think that; he can’t be in every single shot like I’d prefer, after all.

Kyou Kara Maou 45 — Betrothed vs. Fiancee

July 24, 2005, 10:34 pm

Aww, this was a cute and random little episode. I am fiercely protective of the Wolfram/Yuri pairing, though, so I was not very appreciative of a challenger! Yuri is so cute and gracious, though, willing to give Wolfram up to Elizabeth so easily… either that or he really is just a big wimp. I’d like to think he’s just gracious, of course. And Wolfram is just too sweet, staying up all night with Yuri to help him with his swordsmanship. The two of them are one of my favorite pairings ever and this episode totally highlighted a bunch of the reasons why.

Even so, I rebel against any episode which barely has any Muraken in it. Rar.

The fangirl maids taking bets on who would win the duel was priceless. I love those fangirl maids.

Kyou Kara Maou 44 — Illusionary Girl

Well well. This episode was great. (: Not as funny as the Baby Panic one, but probably better overall because there was much more of a plot involved. Even so, very episodic and fillery, which I kind of appreciate from my shounen-ai fluff shows.

After watching this, I really feel bad for Ulrike. Poor thing, all locked up in that temple and such. But at least she got to get out in this episode, and we got to see her really in action a little bit more. Child!Ulrike was really freaking adorable, and I don’t blame her one bit for feeling the way she did.

Awesome Wolfram/Yuri in this episode. Just awesome. Childlike!Wolfram and Childlike!Gunter totally glomping Yuri (as seen in caps 4 and 5) was absolutely priceless and definitely the best moment in this episode. Any interaction between Wolfram and Yuri just makes me squee like a little fangirl, and I’m totally not ashamed. XD

Speaking of YuuRam interaction, the next episode looks like it’s going to be amazing for that. Hee.

Kyou Kara Maou 43 — Blood Pledge Castle Baby Panic!

Holy cow. Um. Really, words cannot describe ths ep. When you come right down to it, it’s filler. But, in the vein of wonderful filler like the Get Backers hospital episode or the FMA Flame Alchemist episode, this filler does not suck. In fact, it’s absolutely brilliant. And it kind of even has plot!

Y’know, I shall let the caps speak for themselves. The entire ep is just as silly as those caps suggest. This is, of course, the reason I fell in love with this series in the first place.

Kyou Kara Maou 42 — Distant Promise

This is definitely one of the funnier eps of KKM in a while. (: After the seriousness of the box arc, it was really nice to settle down back in the real world as it were. Yuri’s mother is still freaking hilarious, and in this ep we not only get to see Yuri’s dad and older brother, but we also get to see both Yuri and his brother as kids! Of course, it is kind of disturbing that Yuri’s mother liked to dress Yuri up in girls’ clothes…

Murata Ken was awesome again in this episode. His doctor is another great American stereotype character; he even likes anime. ^^

I’m really interested in how the introduction of Yuri’s older brother will pan out, and what’s in store for both Yuri and Muraken now that they’re back in New Mazoku again. The big mess caused by Conrad in the box arc seems to have been all straightened out for the most part, so we’ll see where it goes from here…
