Mai Otome 03 — First Ex•pe•ri•ence

October 29, 2005, 10:13 pm

Ah, much improvement from the last episode. Things were a little slow to get going, and the fight between Arika and Nina wasn’t great or anything, but it’s only to be expected since Arika doesn’t have any actual training or anything. Ended on a bit of a cliffhanger as well, but I’m not exactly chomping at the bit to find out what happens. I mean, it’s pretty damn obvious for the most part. I keep having to remind myself that it took a little while for Mai HiME to get off the ground, too…

Mai Otome 02 — Gust of Wind that Blows Through the Eden of the Otome!?

October 28, 2005, 3:24 pm

Can’t say I really enjoyed this episode. It seemed like Arika running around the school was just an excuse to introduce the audience to all the characters from before. Episode 3 looks like it will shape up to be interesting, but… we shall see, I suppose.

I can’t goddamn believe that Mikoto is a cat. I also can’t believe how lesbian this show is becoming. But that seemed to be all that Mai-HiME was about for some people.

Mai Otome 01 — Dreaming ☆ Arika

October 18, 2005, 8:10 pm

I have to admit, I wasn’t really feeling this show when I first started watching it. Arika is one of those hyper-annoying heroines, and I don’t like her as much as I came to like Mai in Mai HiME. Also, the reappearance of the characters from Mai HiME in different roles was really throwing me off (Mashiro as the princess, Natsuki as the principal, Shizuru as Natsuki’s right-hand lesbian woman). But as the episode progressed, I came to overlook the weirdness and got to really enjoy the show.

What I like about Mai Otome is that the animation is extremely fluid. The scene where Arika and Nina “rescue” the princess was a good example, as well as all of the battle scenes at the end. The one with Shizuru especially impressed me; the way she swung that chain thing around was pretty goddamn awesome.

I predict that the music for this series might be even better than the music for Mai HiME, which is saying a lot. We shall see. I also predict that I will end up liking this series a great deal more than Mai HiME, which isn’t saying quite as much, but still a bit. Again, we shall see. I’m definitely planning on watching more, which wasn’t something I could say when I first started watching.
