Scrapped Princess DVD 5 — Episodes 17-20
January 7, 2006, 4:45 pmAnother long wait ahead of me… not as long as last time, but still quite long. The cliffhanger at the end of this disc was absolutely killer, one of the worst cliffhangers I’ve ever experienced on an anime DVD. Of course, this is one of the first times I’m buying a show completely blind and watching as it comes out, which is certainly interesting…

I cried twice in this episode, once when Furet died, and once when Pacifica’s mother died. Furet… well, I’d been spoiled by the soundtrack song titles, so I knew he would die, but I didn’t know how or the circumstances. The way that he died, remembering Pacifica, made his death really poignant and sad. And how Pacifica found out, with Leo crying… that whole episode was very well done. I didn’t know about Pacifica’s mother’s death, though. The worst part about that was how she died and Pacifica didn’t realize that it was her mother, and wouldn’t call her okaasan before she died. It was pretty in character for Pacifica, so I can’t really fault her for it, but it was really heartbreaking nonetheless. I hope that she realizes the situation in the last disc now that she has her memory back and gets to deal with it in her own way, although I doubt that there will be much time for even further character development among all the craziness that’s going on.
And boy is there a lot of craziness. The Peacemakers wanting to pwn the world pretty much sucks, but the Peacemakers pretty much suck anyway. No big surprise that Shannon and Zefiris are merged completely now, although episode 20 ended before we could really see how that would affect everything. This is all coming to a head in really interesting and unexpected ways, which is why I can’t wait for that last disc. I’m kind of thinking that the prince is going to come back and do something awesome, or at least I hope so. I’d like to see more of his character, at any rate.

January 24th is the street date for the last disc. Here’s hoping I can find it sooner.

Scrapped Princess DVD 4 — Episodes 15-16
October 27, 2005, 1:05 pmYeah, it’s gonna be a long wait until December.
[spoiler paragraphs - highlight to read]:
It’s a Bones trademark to really take things to the places you don’t want them to go. When the wizards started chanting the big evil spell thing, I figured that something would happen to prevent it. But then… it happened. And everything got all fucked up, another trademark of Bones. Oh Bones, so mean to your characters…
Shannon’s true dragoon form was hawt.
In episode 16, it was interesting how Pacifica’s character changed from the beginning of the episode to the end. At the beginning, she was pretty interested in finding people who knew her, but when they finally showed up and admitted who they were, she didn’t want anything to do with them. I’m pretty sure that some part of her, at least subconsciously, knows what’s going on and doesn’t want to have to deal with it anymore. The escapism must be nice.

I’ve pretty much given up on trying to guess what will happen next, because it seems like it will be an exercise in futility. I can only wait and wonder and surely be happily surprised.

Scrapped Princess DVD 3-4 — Episodes 9-14
October 26, 2005, 9:13 pmAlright, so I’m not done watching the fourth disc just yet, but I have to jot down some thoughts. Because this show is all I heard and hoped it would be and more.
[spoiler paragraphs - highlight to read]:
While it’s one of those things you can look back at in retrospect and go “Oh yeah, I totally should have seen that coming,” the true nature of Pacifica’s power was quite a surprise to me. I’m very glad that I managed to not get myself spoiled about this series (unlike a couple of episodes of FMA…), because I don’t think I would have enjoyed these episodes nearly as much without the shock value.
Speaking of shock value, the thing about Sutepri that reminds me of FMA the most is the fact that everything that happens in the show is important. Things happen in the beginning that you don’t think are incredibly important, but then they come back and kick you in the ass. The thing about that girl from the lake being a Dragoon actually made me say “No way!” out loud, making me rather glad that no one else was in the apartment at the time…
I have this great respect for the writers of this show in setting up Pacifica’s character, because they managed to give her all these amazing powers and be super nice and awesome and still not be at all Mary Sue-ish. Props, props. The end of episode 14, where Pacifica dives into Shannon’s head to reverse Natalie’s brainwashing was especially well-done in this respect. That scene freaked me out, though, because I didn’t realize what was going on at first and was really disoriented by the fact that Shannon was so much older than he should have been. ^^;;

I am going to be pushing really hard to get this shown at anime club as a semester series. I think people will love it. Plus, I need the excuse to watch it again. If it stays as good as it is now, it will definitely become one of my favorite shows.
Once I finish disc 4, I anticipate that the wait for disc 5 will be really hard…

Scrapped Princess DVD 1-2 — Episodes 1-8
August 4, 2005, 3:56 pmI first got interested in this show way back last summer, before it was licensed by Bandai. I downloaded all the fansubs, but never got a chance to watch them, and burned them off onto discs. Then it was licensed and I got unnaturally excited, considering it was a show I had never even seen. Then, last winter, I had to send in my computer for repairs and borrowed my boyfriend’s computer, which didn’t have any of my current anime stash on it, so when I got bored, I put in a disc of Sutepri and watched the first three episodes (all that was on the disc). I was even more interested in the show after that, and decided to buy the DVDs when they came out (the fact that Crispin Freeman was directing the dub was a factor in that decision, too), but I got my own computer back and got distracted.
So I acquired the first DVD in the series. In fact, I preordered it, and got the version with the LE figure. I can’t even understand myself why I did this for a show I’d only seen three episodes of, but there you are. I rewatched the first two episodes on the DVD, then got distracted again. And now, finally, after getting the second DVD as well, I finally sat down and watched all the episodes in my possession on DVD.
It’s like I psychically knew how much I would adore this show. I mean, it’s Studio Bones, and I’m a huge Bones whore, so of course I love the animation and such. But the characters are just so endearing in ways I can’t even put my finger on entirely. Even Zefiris, who is such an enigma at this point, is just fascinating to me. I can’t say that I’ve enjoyed a show on this many levels so quickly since I first started watching Fullmetal Alchemist, and people who know me realize that that’s saying a lot.
[spoiler paragraph - highlight to read]:
I got really sucked in during episode 6, where Shannon merges with Zefiris and they fight the Peacemaker. The show had just seemed so cookie-cutter up until that point; well, maybe “cookie-cutter” isn’t the word for it, but there definitely wasn’t really anything to set it apart from other shows. And then when that happened, and Shannon just cut the Peacemaker down with a few quick swings of his sword, I was sold, totally absorbed, and couldn’t wait to finish watching the disc (I watched disc 2 all in one sitting, but I got a phone call at the end of episode 6 and thought it would kill me.)
[end of spoiler paragraph]
I think I’m lucky that disc 2 ended where it did, and not on some kind of cliffhanger. (In that respect, I really feel for the people who are watching Fullmetal Alchemist on DVD only; some of those waits killed me when I only had to wait for a week, so I feel for you.) I think I’ll be able to wait it out until disc 3 comes out, and not delve into my fansubs in the meantime. That might not be possible for the rest of the series, though; I’m far too excited to see how this is going to all play out.
